Our long-awaited basket project is finally underway in Soplan, Omkoi.
This basket project has been develped in direct response to the dwindling number of basket makers in the villages where we work. Over the last ten years or so we have witnessed a marked decline and loss of interest in basket making. As with so many traditional handicrafts around the world, those who possess the skills belong to the older generation. Many of the younger generation are no longer interested in learning the time-consuming craft.
As traditionally crafted baskets are rapidly disappearing from the market, Sop Moei Arts is hoping to reverse this trend in the villages where we work by encouraging younger Karen men to learn these skills. In Sop Lan village, four men have so far joined the project and we hope that as things progress, more people will become interested in keeping this age-old craft alive.
