One of our aims in our work with the Pwo Karen is the preservation of traditional skills. For Pwo women, this includes textile weaving in general and weaving on backstrap looms in particular. The items usually woven on these looms are men and women’s clothing and blankets.
While many of our products feature textiles that are woven on upright looms, our popular Karen Blouse range uses ethnic fabrics that are still woven on backstrap looms. Many of the villages where these textiles are woven lie in remote locations and require a whole day’s travel on dirt roads, but the end result is worth it! These beautiful, brightly coloured textiles are each a reminder that traditional ways and handicrafts are still being practised even in the face of new lifestyles and global changes. Each blouse is unique in its details, embroidery and colour choice – a reflection of the woman who wove it.
